Mindful Training
Eight Verses for Mind-Training Composed by Geshe Langri Thangpa Dorjee Singghe (1054-1123).
Audio: H.H. the Dalai Lama
May I consider sentient beings,
dearer than the Wish-Fulfilling Gem.
Best wishes in mind,
Forever hold them dear.

Whenever whoever I am with
May I see myself least important.
And sincerely others in mind,
Hold them dearly highest.

Always observe my behaviour.
Negative thoughts may arise,
[and]Hurt myself and others.
Confront and suppress it with force.

For unpleasant sentient being is,
Overwhelmed by bad-karma and suffering.
When stumble upon rare treasure,
Cherish and empathise.

Out of envy others may,
Insult, abuse and treat me unjustly.
May I accept [freewill] defeat and loss,
And offer victory to them.

Whom I have helped,
With great expectation.
Did immense harm and unjust in return.
May I see him as my true teacher.

In essence, directly or indirectly,
Offer total wellness to mothers.
Suffering and pain of mothers,
Inconspicuously take upon myself.

All above be free from
eight compromises of Acquired Concept.
Recognizing all phenomena is illusory,
May I be free from bondage of disgusting Attachment.
*mother: sentient beings
Transliteration: karma

MS Tibetan Keyboard and Keymaps for Vista and Windows 7

Vista and Window 7 has ready to use Tibetan Keyboard and MS Himalaya Fonts that includes Devnagari, English and Tibetan.

How to activate Tibetan KeyBoard called BO

Goto Start; Control Panel; Regional and Language Options; Keyboards and Languages and click Change Keyboards tab; A new window “Text Services and input Languages” will pop up; there are three tabs. Click General Tab, if it is not already. Click Add button at far right; another window will pop up. Go down the long list of languages until you see Tibetan(PRC). Click the “+” sign and there you will see yet another Tibetan(PRC) with a small blank check box in front. Check/Tick just that box and touch nothing else in the list. Now click OK tab and you are back to “Text Services and input Languages” window. Next step is important. There are three options at the bottom of the “this” window- OK, Cancel, Apply. Click Apply button. On the same window “Text Services and input Languages”, click “Language Bar” tab. Tick mark “Docked in the taskbar” and check mark the box “Show additional Language bar icons in the taskbar” and “Show text labels on the Language bar”. Finally, click OK button at the bottom of this window and “Regional and Language Option” window too, if open.

Now you will see on your Taskbar EN icon. Click on EN and small window will show “EN English(US) “ and “BO Tibetan(PRC)”. Check Mark whichever Keyboard you want to use.

Note:
  1. MS word 2007 and above will be able to use this Keyboard with MS Himalaya Font which is 16bit Unicode.
  2. Do not forget to select “Microsoft Himalaya” font when Tibetan Keyboard BO is in use.
  3. This keyboard is little different from Phonetic Tibetan Keyboard we are familiar with but this is much faster and easy once we are used to it.

MS Tibetan Keyboard Maps for Vista and Windows 7

Dead Key: “m”
MS Tibetan keyboard use letter "m" as a DeadKey to change MODE or Stacking purpose.

If you want “ གོ ” just type “k” and “o”. However, if you want “ རྒོ “ hit r, m, k, o. Dead Key “m” moves “ག “ below and under the “ར”. Another example: For " སྒྲུ་ " s, m,k,m,r,u, j and for སྒྲོ་ s, m,k,m,r,o,j;

ཡི་དྭགས type d, m, u,k,s

Follow the same procedure for any other stacks.

Remember Ra, La, Sa, the three Gos, first, then "m" and then whatever letters you want under those Gos. It is more intuitive, the way Tibetan language is written with long hand.

Once you are used to this keyboard map, it is hundred times faster. Such Keyboard map is based on something called “Frequency” . Least used key are far to reach by finger and most often used Keys are just below the home row and Dot or Tsak is “j” which is used gazillion times. Also, now, you can stack any characters.

Written Tibetan Lines in poem Style or fixed length format ends with double “Shea or ༎”. If we use single “Shea །’ twice, Text Alignment or Justification in Browser and Word will throw one Shea to the next line which is wrong. Microsoft Himalaya resolves it. It has a single character (dead key m and then ‘). Here is an example.

Old way:

Fast keyboard Switch: left hand side (Alt+Shift)
When you are typing and switching between two keyboards often like one above, it is cumbersome to use the normal Mouse and Click on Task Bar BO or EN. You can press left hand side Alt key + Shift key together without leaving MS Word at all. This is realy handy if your document is mix of Tibetan and English as often is.

I paste Keyboard Maps here which are copied from : http://uoc191.chinaw3.com/English/docs/yalasoo_en_MStbKb.html
for convenience. You can click above link for more info.

Keyboard history: English
When first type writer was introduced, Keys were spread out to “slow” down the speed. Fast typist might “jam” the narrow slot for pin head that strikes the letter on the paper. This slot is just big enough to squeeze in one and only one key at a time. This key layout or map was called QWERTY system which we are adapted to.

Computer is a different animal as far as mechanics of keyboard is concerned. There is no slot that can jam the keys. Faster is better. Dr. Dvorak introduced English key map that is based in “frequency” and typist finger movement in mind. A typical typist will gain 22% speed. 70% of keystrokes are on the home row. May be Dvorak Keyboard can alleviate finger fatigue- my guess.

People have learned QWERTY and they don’t want to switch or ready to pay for unlearn and relearn a new Dvorak keystroke. We are stuck with bad habit.

MS Tibetan Keyboard is in the right direction- Frequency and finger movement. Learn this new one and it will pay off in the long run. Apple use almost the same keymap. You can send emails without any difficulty too via ipad, iphone, itouch or Vista and Windows7.

Keymaps are here:
Keymap 1:
This is a regular keystrokes.

Keymap 2:
This is regular keystroke with Shift key

Keymap 3:
This KeyStroke is with DeadKey "m" small "m" used for stacks

This Keystroke is with Deadkey "M" capital or UpperCase "M"

Keymap 5:
This keystroke is with Alt+Ctrl+Shift combination.

How to Transfer Audio Cassette to PC, CD, DVD or MP3

Hardware
  • An Audio Cassettes player with “line out” or Headphone Jack/socket, or RCA cable ; almost all Audio cassettes player, including WalkMan has such socket; Visit garage sales as these player are going out of utility. Player may have either 3.5mm Jack or 2.5mm Jack. Make sure what it is.

  • Computer with “Line In” or Microphone(Mic) In Jack/Socket, at least. These are 3.5mm jack, mostly. Make sure what size it is before following next step.

  • Visit electronic Store or Dollar Store for cable that will connect Cassettes Player to PC. Both ends of the cable will have 3.5mm jack will have two little grooves running around the plug-in part of the plug. If there's only one, it's a mono cable and will not transfer your recording in stereo.

  • If your Audio player has 2.5mm Jack size instead of 3.5mm, there is a small adaptor available which will do the trick or conversion.

Free software for Sound recording
Vista or Window 7 has a Sound Recorder Program under Accessories. Just click it and small window will pop up. IF everything is ready, click Start Recording. When you are done click Stop Recording. Give it a name and you are done.

Format
It is in WMA format. Download any Free WMA to MP3 converter to change format.

Quality of Sound/Audio
Test sound quality by first recording a small sample. This is important step. Adjust Audio Cassettes Player Volume to avoid Noise, Echo and other unwanted sounds. Quality can be as good as the original and not any better!

Note: Since all cassettes do not have the same sound volume or quality, above sample test may have to be done on each Cassette separately. Audio Cassettes have two sides. This presents a problem if it is not Song or music (small chunks). Which side is the beginning? Cassettes with 90 or 60 minute long lectures, speech, talk and sermons are confusing if end is at the top. May need Audio Editor to chop them up and sort them in order.

CD/DVD
MP3 formats can be copied to any CD or DVD with DVD Writer/Burner. 10 Audio Cassettes (90 min) can be transferred to ONE DVD.

How to Remove Computer Viruses- an option

Computer Viruses can steal email address, erase important documents, make computer inoperable or shut-down completely and many will flash layers of pop-ups with dangerous viruses infections warnings and how it can remove and immunize against these imminent threats immediately by paying them or it.

They sometimes masquerade as Win 7 or XP from legitimate software companies. They are rogue.

Here is a nice and short program called “Norton Power Eraser” from Symantic Company. Go here to download it. IT is free and does the job nicely. Here is how it is done.

Of course your computer is down. Go to or borrow friend’s working computer and download NPE.exe from here and copy it on to a USB zip drive or CD or Floppy.

Goto your sick computer and start it with power button. We are booting into Safe Mode. As soon as power button is on, keep on tapping F8 button until you see a black screen with list of options. Tap up or down Arrow keys to select “Safe Mode with Networking”. See the screen shot below.

Once you are in Windows Safe Mode; Windows Icon are big. Copy Norton Power Eraser program to your C drive. Click Start and Computer. Hard Drive C and others will show up.

Click on NPE.exe and follow the instruction. Select SCAN first; another screen will show up. Select Include RootKit SCAN RESTART. It may restart your computer several times. When it is all over and your computer looks okay, run NPE.exe second time to make sure.

Now your computer should be back to normal. It helped me.

Next time, do not open any email that looks suspicious weather it from Private office or Kashag unless you have a dealing with them. Fraud emails, many times, are send from real or actual office computer that is hacked and emails are stolen. It is like, someone creeps into a legitimate office. Steal their letter-head and send you a mail without a signature. Emails don’t have a signature but address or letter-head. Few days back, someone hacked into and stole all email address from Bestbuy. So if you receive any email from bestbuy, don’t open it.

Image resizing

These are days of digital photos and higher mega pixels. Problem arises when we want these visual memories send via email to your loved ones or print a hardcopy of 6X4. HIgh megapixel photos take very long time to send via email and 6X4 photo Print need not be that big file either. Only way out is to resize the image. One or two digital photos to resize are fun but it becomes painful when there are lots and lots of them. What you need is a FREE program that does it for you.

The good news is there is one such program hidden under your nose. Microsoft Windows Vista and XP have built in program hidden under explorer- not Internet Explorer.

Steps for Vista
1 Open Windows Explorer a) Key with Windows + E key or b) Click Start and Right Click Computer and Click Explore.

2) Goto your image folders and select all your images to be Resized by Pressing SHIFT and Arrow KEYS.

3) Right Click the group of images: Send To: Mail Recipient. Attach files Window will popup. Choose your size from Picture Size DropDown List. Small, Smaller, Medium etc.

3) Click Attach. Don’t worry about emailing… window. Next step will clarify all.

4) Goto Emailing..… Window; Click File; Click Save Attachments..; Click OK; A fresh Window will popup. Type a folder name and save all your resized images here.

That is it. Now cancel Emailing..window by clicking X on the Right Top.

Happy memories and emails.

Is there a short cut to open often used subfolders that is deep down?

Yes. Vista can do it nicely.

Goto that frequently used folder; Right Click: Send To: Desktop (Create Shortcut) and you are done.

To open this subfolder, in future, Click Desktop and you will see your subfolder name and click it. That is an easy one.

Iphone Ring tones

You can make any mp3 into iPhone Ring Tone for Windows if it is less than 30 seconds. Here is how it is done.
1 Chop up your mp3 into 30 second long. Use public Free software like Audacity.
2 Open your iTune and open this chopped mp3 file up. It will be in your music list(File / Add file to Library..).
3 Right Click this song and click on Create ACC Version. Now you will have 2 songs of the same Title but different extensions. iTune 9 has file Kind if you Right Click file header and Tick Kind type.
4 Drag this ACC extension file or song into a Window folder. Drag it, if there is no copy command in iTune. iTune 9 has Copy command. You will find your song with Extension M4a.
5 Change its extension to M4r. Ignore the warning by Window.
6 Remove the original MP3 song from your iTune list and Add File this new M4r instead.
Sync your iPhone. Look under your iPhone Hardware and under RingTone Category. Your new RingTone should be there, if not, your MP3 file is bit too long. Shorten it and repeat from beginning.

Here is a Tibetan National Anthem Tune for iPhone to download(TNAIPhone.m4r). It is iPhone ready format. Save it to your computer and load it via iTune (File / Add file to Library..) and Sync it with your iPhone hardware.

YouTube videos(flv) to MP3

YouTube files are Flash format(flv). You can use FREE, as of now, YouTubeDownloader (http://youtubedownload.altervista.org/) to download and convert flv formats to mp3. Steps are simple. There is choice tick box to either to download or convert songs from your hardisk. Choose your task at hand and enjoy songs.

Video File Converter

AnyVideoConverter (http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video/) is yet another FREE software that can convert any videos to MP4 for iPhone/iPod/ iTouch format or vise-versa ie mp4 to mp3 or mpg etc. You may choose NOT to register and still can use it full. Mpg or Mpeg format files can be converted to MP4 format.

Audio Editor

Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) is a yet another FREE software that will let you Clip mp3 files to your liking and size.

Video CD to DVD( poor man’s solution)

Video CD’s have main file extension as DAT under MPEGAV sections. Copy this file DAT to your Harddisk folder and rename the extension to MPg. Ignore the Window warning. That is all there is to it. Copy every DAT file in one folder, rename them and copy them to your DVD disk. 10 Video CDs will fit into 1 DVD.

Robocopy: Robust file copy for Windows

This new command-line instruction available in Window Vista and later is a tool like “copy” or “xcopy” but much more powerful and useful.

I find it very handy and fast to save my files (documents, songs, videos, photos) to other portable disks. These second or third backups are not encrypted but are open. I can plug it any USB device and my files are ready to open or use. Backup programs and backups are handy for certain use but it requires native program to use, an extra constrint.

Robocopy has tons of new features. It is complex and very powerful tool with network and power outage safety or continuity built-in. System administrators shall find it most useful.

There is a Graphical User Interface (GUI) available too for dummies out there to download. However, these are third party give away. GUI may not let you use all the Options that are available with this robust Robocopy.

However, if you are comfortable with command box or black window that pops up when you type “command” or “cmd” in your Vista, Start box, you have the freedom to choose more than 80 different options with batch file to boot.

Type “cmd” without quotes in the Start box and hit Return. Block box will pop up. Type “Robocopy /?” without quotes and you will see all the options. Use your Mouse to browse up and down.

Example: Robocopy A: B: *.* /S /R:0

A : Source; Source can be a Hard Disk or network or folder or website directory.
B : Destination; Destination can be just another Hard disk, folder, network folder.
*.* : ALL the files.
/S : including all the Sub-Directories.
/R:0 :Retries set to Zero; No retries if somehow it fails to copy file either it is locked, system file or networked but is busy etc.

I have one Hard disk with two partitions ie C and D. D is where I keep all my files (Songs, Videos, Documents, Photos). Data in D is the one that must be copied for safe keeping. I have another USB disk named M by computer when I plug it in. Idea is to copy everything in D Drive to M drive as a second copy in case D drive goes bonker one day. I will still have my Data intact in my M Drive.

“Robocopy D: M: *.* /s /R:0” will do the hard work of copying all the files from my D disk to M disk. If you are doing this for the first time, it will take quite a while. Afterwards when you copy files, Robocopy will copy those files that are modified since you last Robocopy and leave the rest. You will wonder how fast it is.

Speedup IDE Harddisk, DVD and CD writers

IDE interface is old technology and is replace by SATA which is much faster. However, IDE drive with IDE 40 (flat cable with 40 wires/conductors) cable can be replaced by IDE 80 cable (same width flat cable with 80 wires/conductors) to speed up Harddisk, DVD and CD writer by as much as by 70 percent. Both share same 40 pin Sockets and 40 Pin Connectors- No difference.

Yellow cable is IDE 80 and Grey is IDE 40. For comparison, IDE 40, Grey, is kept underneath the Yellow, in this case, IDE 80. Both have the same width but wires within the IDE 40 is thicker. Notice also the colored Sockets for IDE 80(yellow cable has blue, black and grey connectors).

How
First acquire an IDE 80 cable. IDE 80 cables and IDE 40 cables have same width and same type of connectors- wires are thinner and finer. Every other wire in IDE 80 is “grounded”. IDE 80 comes with color coded polarity- right ways to connect ( Blue, Gray, Black).

Blue end goes to Motherboard, Gray to Slave and Black to Master drive. Any other way will not work!!

Also don’t forget to use DMA to enhance disk speed. Right Click MyComputer, Properties, DeviceManager and expand IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Right click Primary IDE Channel, Properties, AdvancedSettings Tab, Change Transfer Mode from PIO to DMA if available. Repeat the same for Secondary IDE channel too.

Disclaim: I am not responsible for any damage whatsoever. Information is freely given as is.
